TechFlash: The top 10 best (and worst) CEOs and companies in Seattle

  • Glenn Kelman · 5 months ago
Anyone who has met Rich knows that, at least in Zillow's case, the rankings are dead-on. He is intelligent, mature, generous and composed. Congrats Rich!
  • Transformer · 5 months ago
This is fantastic info. But I wonder how accurate it will be, when you might be able to dedicate a full time internal resource to prop up the ratings, etc.
  • anon · 5 months ago
Amazon would have been on the "worst place to work for" list if their stock price is not on the tear right now. It's one of the most toxic workplace in the Pacific Northwest.
  • Rich Barton · 5 months ago
    Thanks, Glenn.
The reason that Zillow has 49 salary reviews and 41 company reviews on Glassdoor is because I decided to "eat my own dogfood" (as chairman of Glassdoor) and I emailed all Zillow employees and asked them to honestly fill out the Glassdoor survey. I challenge all you CEOs and HR directors out there to save money on company survey consultants, and simply ask your employees to review your companies in the bright sunshine of Glassdoor.
  • Dave Schappell · 5 months ago
All I can say is, "phew!"
  • Anonymous · 5 months ago
"Unfortunately for Glaser, he also appeared in Glassdoor's list of top 50 lowest rated CEOs. He was the only Northwest CEO to get that dubious honor"

Mark Pigott is also from the NW.
  • Tom Seery · 5 months ago
    Amen @5
  • Bromancing · 5 months ago
    Rich,

It makes absolutely no sense to encourage folks to do their 360 reviews on Glassdoor -- reviews are forever, can be spiteful/slanted (esp anon ones like this comment), don't show corrective changes over time, and is potentially harmful to the good components of the company (think about fundraising).

In short, it's too invasive -- it's like encouraging spouses to rate one another. Wait, I think I just gave you another start-up idea (ballandchain.com).

And can someone PLEASE get Kelmann to shut up with his bromancing pablum!
  • Teddy · 5 months ago
I thought Tony Rojas was President/CEO of Slalom, not John Tobin.
  • Wow · 5 months ago
Glenn trying to please the crowd???
  • Firoz Lalji · 5 months ago
I completely disagree with this chart.

    Complete BS.
  • Anom2 · 5 months ago
Zones Inc, I might be able to agree on. It appears everything is being outsourced oversees and their tenured personel are being laid off.
  • GlaserFan · 5 months ago
Glaser brought out a company that delivered audio over the internet on a 14.4 modem and video over 28.8 modem. That's was true innovation at the time. Over time, he'll figure it out. The only lesson here is to make sure to pay high salaries, but no stock options or equity. It really distracts labor.
  • Ex Employee · 5 months ago
Firoz needs to speak with his chain of command and KNOW that people who put their sweat and blood into Zones have been eliminated and replaced in India or just a ploy by Chicago?????? EX CPCS and merged with Zones for who knows what? Firoz, FYI we have all done our best to build the company and this is how they treat us???? Meaning your CEO pick, look close.
  • Someone who cared · 5 months ago
So, 5 + years and you get "eliminated". Zones, Zones......need to really look at what you have in people who care. The word is the VP of procurment/ whatever else is a loose canon and fires and hires on her own " feelings".....Scary
  • SaddamBarton · 5 months ago
Thanks to you, glorious people of Zilow to act so honorably in ranking your mighty overlord with the generousity that his excellency has shown you. Thanks to you also glorious kelman for always having your nose in close proximity to any influential person's behind including zillionaire Barton and muckraker arrington. After your fellacious acts, perhaps you can appear in a future Bruno movie.
  • Someone who cared · 5 months ago

@Wow, I admit, it's always easy to be diplomatic, but it's easy too to be nasty on these blogs; in this case I meant what I said. Rich is a fantastic CEO, and I hate it when Redfin and Zillow overlap in any area because Rich and the rest of the Zillow crew are hard to compete against.
  • Stewart · 5 months ago
Firoz is a nice guy, he often walked through our cubes with warm greetings and smiles. Unfortunately, Zones doesnt pay enough to put up with BS and politics. The company's achilles heel would be their D grade managers, with the exception of Shawn C.
  • OMG · 5 months ago
Read the other posts....Yes in Renton Firoz used to come by and make us feel valuable.....I think after reading these posts...That the CEO pick needs to be investigated.....That is just my observation... I still love Firoz, but I think he has no clue!
  • Scott Weiss · 5 months ago
All I can say is, this is one damn entertaining blog! Thanks to everyone for all of the wit!

    I love it.
  • Matt Scoble · 5 months ago
What were the criteria? How was this judged? Perhaps I missed something but there is so little data here that it is hard to assess the validity of this information. Some granular data, please?
  • getaroundgirl · 3 months ago
i completely agree - it all seems based on employees or past employees posting their feedback. Not very scientific or a solid population to base the info on.
it sure is funny though - I've consulted at many of these organizations and would not disagree with any of the ratings for them (on both the good and bad side)
  • Silvia C · 5 months ago
@MattScoble. I thought it was pretty clear that this data was from an employee survey. For the NW at least 10 people per company, 50 per company for the national list.

I imagine this kind of survey attract people who either love or hate the company/CEO. So extremes might be expected. But I think it is indicative, no surprises for me.
  • Hater · 5 months ago
    a) PJ Johnston should be on the list.

    b) 0 percent disapproval beats Kim Jong Il.

    c) Kelman is soooooo tiring.
  • O-no-u-didnt · 5 months ago
Did you know that on glassdoor.com you could leave comments for your competitors posing as their employees? Easy as pie actually.

Didn't do it, but people will for sure. There goes the soundness and validity of this site!
  • Tim Besse, Glassdoor · 5 months ago
Thanks @SylviaC for clarifying. Tim from Glassdoor.com here. I’m a co-founder (and former Seattle resident) and just wanted to expand on our survey process. (And no, Rich Barton can’t influence results.) Surveys on Glassdoor.com are voluntarily completed by employees of each company or by employees who worked at the company within the past three years. As part of the process, we ask employees to complete balanced reviews, which means they must include pros and cons about the work environment and can offer advice to senior management and rate their company across eight different categories. We also ask that they rate their CEO asking if they approve or disapprove of the job the CEO is doing leading the company. For each CEO in our database, you can see how many responses have been submitted and their approval/disapproval rating. Employees also have the opportunity to complete a salary survey by submitting details about their compensation, which allows us to report pay data for specific jobs at specific companies, which is extremely helpful to people who might be looking at a job offer or for current employees who want to see if they are being paid fairly.

While this data is presented anonymously on the site, our community members must use a valid email in creating an account and every submission is reviewed by a person before going live. If we suspect any submission to be false, we have the ability to go back to the submitter and challenge the data integrity. If it’s not resolved to our satisfaction, the data is never posted. We reject about 12% of all submissions. While we don’t claim this data is statistically significant, we know from conversations with company representatives and recruiters that our data is representative of reality and directionally relevant.

For those who haven’t yet completed a review or salary survey on Glassdoor, I invite you to do so and help us further expand this important level of transparency around pay and work.
  • WOW!! · 5 months ago
Glassdoor.com allows current and past employees to post information on a survey. It does go into depth when asking infomration on how a person feels, it does ask if the person was employed or ex employed of that company they surveyed.

Now for damage control and someone worried. Firoz is nice and does walk the floor from time to time but he does not have a clue when it comes to Zones. All the outsourcing to India and laying off the US employees is not helping but is hurting the sales. Firoz, stop getting greedy and start thinking of the company, you have to fix this mess. You are contributing to the economy/recession issue. Pay attention, your sales floor has spoken and told you what they want and you still do nothing. Now they are afraid to speak up as they might be next to be let go but they are getting tired. You make them feel they don't matter when they are bringing in the sales, when you have always made them feel quite the opposite. Somewhere about 2 or 3 years ago that changed, maybe when you started outsourcing to India and putting people in higher positions that don’t’ help make it better? Take a good look into that. You do have the wrong people in some high up positions giving them authority and making decisions when they should not have it and you are taking the sales out of the sales rep. You have and had some of the hardest working and dedicated people working for you and you are not treating them as you should be. WaMu did better than Zones, WOW that has a lot of say! Shame on you, Firoz and those in high up positions; you need to resolve this and make it right again, Firoz!
  • Wait a minute · 5 months ago
"While this data is presented anonymously on the site, our community members must use a VALID EMAIL email in creating an account and every submission is reviewed by a person before going live. If we suspect any submission to be false, we have the ability to go back to the submitter and challenge the data integrity."

You can make up an e-mail address in 2 seconds and your "subjective nose" test doesn't amount to diddly in preventing fraud.

    Nice try though . . .
  • Scale? · 5 months ago
@Wait a minute is spot on.

And let's say for the sake of argument that glassdoor.com had the best subjective fraud nose in the land. Does reviewing EVERY submission scale?!!!

    Have fun with that!

I was shown the report by co-workers who like me are offended by the criticism of our CEO.

If you don’t know anything about Zones Inc. We supply solutions to an industry with over 300,000 changing products that can be configured an infinite amount of ways.

I have always been impressed by the training and education made available to employees. From products, procedures to conception of personal goals, our management team works hard to build a positive work environment. Regardless of gender, race, age, tattoos, piercing, suits, religion, politics, motorcycles, SUV's, or hybrids, you are heard, understood, and encouraged to reach for your highest goals.

I am supported by help desks, solution teams, managers, product specialist, credit, HR, Vendors, and co-workers. I have to thank the many departments who support the sales team. All focus on successful relationships, every where.

On a Global note, our India staff are hard working men & women who do amazing work & I would not take food out of their children’s mouths any more then I would want some one to do that to me.

And our CEO -This Company, his company, is standing strong, still competing against competitors who have laid off 100's of workers, but still maintain their big advertising budgets. He still stops at our desks, greets you by name, shakes your hand, and amazingly he listens.

Our VP – Send him an email, respond to anything he said. Tell him what you think. He responds to you quickly and as an equal.

The knowledge I have gained while working at Zones is a gift that will enhance my ability to make a living my entire life. The education I recieved is as important as the friends I have made.

Best regards and congratulations to the top ranking companies.

    Sincerely, Shannon-Christi

Specifically - On a Global note, our India staff are hard working men & women who do amazing work & I would not take food out of their children’s mouths any more then I would want some one to do that to me.

Now, put the shoe on your other foot and say you were replaced. Would you feel the same? How long until sales makes a “global” move. Yes, they do perform amazing work in the box. What should be known is that it is us here (USA) that hold their hand and have to jump in when any issue gets outside of that realm to solve an issue. You may also not know that there are over 150+ “global” employees. And, unfortunately this is not just Zones which add to our unemployment rate that keeps rising amongst everything else that goes with it to taint our economy. I wonder if your VP will appreciate your post and how many sales were lost while you drafted it, unless you are on vacation of course….

Zillow? Really that makes me laugh. Foreclosures are on the rise and people want to vote a real estate value website as the top CEO. Wow hope you like that job. Don't blame Zones for America's problems. Thousands of corporations are outsourcing and have been for years. If you don't like it then let the leaders of this country know about it instead of being the passive country you are. Wake up America.
  • Nimish · 5 months ago
I have the shoe on my foot. And I put food on my childs mouths at the table from Zones. And we do not hold hand when the US have problem. You are very very bad.

  • Worst CEO Kal Raman of GlobalS · 5 months ago
How did Kal Raman of GlobalScholar not make it onto the worst CEO list??!! CEO of GlobalScholar, Kal Raman is horrible. The man has blown nearly $50M in start up cash and has yet to turn his company around. Over 30 employees have quit under his leadership, more fired as they stood up to him. You can smell the stink from this company for miles. Kal Raman will continue sailing this sinking ship as it is the only means of employment for many of his family members and close friends.

    John/Todd/Erik,

I am certain that all of this dialogue is making you smile. You are increasing the hit rate for TechFlash and you've got some well respected people weighing in with opinions on one more rate and rank news item. My guess is that this ranks as high in terms of dialogue as the "Top Women In Tech" blog a few weeks back.

My personal opinion is that these articles smell like newstand tabloid journalism. Lot's of heat --- but very little light. I think they detract from the brand of TechFlash as a place to get accurate, compelling journalism and end up having you --- I'm sorry to say --- acting more like arsonists than serious journalists.

The laying off of Trent Tucker by Firoz is totally uncalled for. If it was not for Trent from the Operations side you never would of landed the Microsoft account TWICE!! Lets point out just a few of Trents accomplishments, creating and developing procedures to streamline your business, which made you tons of money.Implemented Sarbanes Oxley accross several sales divisions which he created process documentations and control testing procedures. Initiated/created Corporate Management training program, built sales certification process resulting in a large fold increase in product and service certifications.Worked in conjunction with sales leadership to grow the enterprise business from $4 million to $170 million in sales in a 4 year period.Integrated more than 50% of sales accounts through personalized eCommerce websites, which improved productivity, reduced costs, and allowed for increased sales activity without an increase in support costs. Oh lets not forget Firoz you place a man in charge who came from Compu Com and does not produce sales for 18 to 20 months but yet you keep him on the payroll. He must be a smooth talker. If you want the most from your dollar(s)stop letting go the key people in your organizationthat bring you the most profit. As a former employee I remember Firoz you once said that all opinions count and we need to learn from those opinions but it is clearly evident when someone has a differnet opinion than yours, you lay them off or fire them. You should BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF!! Look in the mirror Firoz and ask yourself what makes a good leader. I will help you with this since you have a clouded view. The ability to find meaning and strength in adversity distinguishes leaders. Be aware of the lenses you bring to a situation; a leader needs to question himself.Learn to rely on others; a leader needs to be able to TRUST other people.Don’t assume anything about a situation; Oh yeah if it was not for Trent and Sean you would be out of business.

Post # 33- I bet you are a "global" employee. And if you work in the USA at Zones it would be unbelievable due to the forming of phrases and grammer. Also, I am a very good person who worked very hard to train YOU!
#37- Trent and Sean Rock, they are the best who made the greatest of Zones. Losing Trent and other tenured employees is very tragic, I think Zones will fold unless Firoz opens his eyes.
  • Nimish · 5 months ago
Good morning Post # 38- I am sorry if my grammer [sic] offend in any way because I work in global market.

I work very hardly to improve my job skill and all of my languages. I know right now you might be very bad employee but if you improve your job skill you can find job where you are useful too, but Zones is selective. How is your Hindi?
  • Skippy · 5 months ago
    In regards to #39

We don't give a RAT$ A$$ about speaking Hindi because we don't need to. Our customers are here in the US as are we and that's why you and everyone else better learn to speak, read and write it. So SUCK IT UP!! Get with the program!
  • Concerned · 5 months ago
#38- I will NEVER be offended and I am also a stellar employee that has been at zones over 8+ years. I am also a good person and care greatly about what happens to Zones. You need to get off your high horse (if you know what that means) and understand I have written processes and procedures for you to follow and STILL have to answer the most basic problem solving skills. And Thank you to #40, I dont give a rats A$$ about Hindi. It is not "English" and you should suck it up because I would hope all these posts cut your time employeed at Zones and we get back the tenured people who know how to build a strong company and quit this global crap. Please Firoz, i cannot even imagine standing at the next banquet hearing a strong speech from you and feel any meaning. Sorry, you have always been an inspiration now though I wonder if Chicago has their talons too deep to save us.
  • Nimish · 5 months ago
Skippy, old chap, enough with the Rat and the A$$. As a salesperson, you must realize you're not only the progenitor but also the proliferator of a free market economy, yet somehow Obama is in place now to hold your hand... Looks like you will all be on a "program" soon enough young man. Not sure I want to be "with the program," if that is your measure of one.
  • Laid-off and glad · 5 months ago
It's sad that Zones has gone downhill in the last 1-2 years. Firoz obviously cares more about the company profit then it's employees wellbeing. It does not makes sense to get rid of good, hardworking, tenured support reps only to replace them with 2 or 3 India reps who cannot even do the same job as the 1 US rep half as well. Not to mention how the customers will feel calling in to find they have to speak to someone in India with very broken English. Why should someone want to work for a company who doesn't care? I know I will never work for Zones again after giving them 5+ years and seeing all the destruction they have caused to my friends and other good people. ShannonChristi must be one of the few brainwashed sales reps. I feel sorry for her. Way to go Zones!
  • blah blah · 5 months ago
Nimish if you put half as much effort into your job as you have on this message board the staff wouldn't hate you nearly as much. You are slow and inaccurate in your work, the inability to communicate is just the icing on the cake with you.

Hopefully your efforts on this board will end up getting you fired.
  • EX Zoner · 5 months ago
I spent 5 + years at zones, I exceeded sales revenue and profit goals from month one after training (i have 15+ plaques to prove it) I purchased my own laptop to help improve my performace and productivity. I was there when they first started outsourcing the bid desk for Gov ed leads to India and had to deal with many Indians whose performace was well, very incomplete and they relied on me to finish their work. I would ask constantly if they completed a certain task that was required for me to do my job and 90% of the time they didnt and said requested i do it for them along with all my work. The manager of their department didnt care that their work was constatnly incomplete, The key thing to remeber why they outsource to India is that they can pay some one 15K per year to do a job it requires 36K here in the USA. I left to start my own business and have been happy ever since.

Most of the management their was a cover your (my own) ass managment style and lots of favortism for the favorite sales reps. A few of the managers had multiple sexual affairs with subordinates that were well known by employees but overlooked by senior management. (Creates very good moral in the corporate world of cube farms)
on a positive note they do train their employees on product knowledge so if you are halfway smart you will learn all you need to know about products. Selling skills and support is where they are lacking. My training class of 35 had so many incompetents that it appeared they hired just to fill a seat and not for quality. i guess they figured that 70% would fail so the more seats they filled then they may have a couple more who actually survived. 1 yr after i "graduated from my training class of 35" 3 of us remained. as of today only one is still there.

I am not surprised at this rating at all.
  • Nimish · 5 months ago
#44, If I'm slow it's because I have to wait too long for the herd of support staff to pick up their bagels at the lobby table in the morning. It's not that big a deal when the lobby table's hosted by a carrying case manufacturer, but if there's breakfast burritos out there... you've gotta get them while they're hot, ya know? My inside rep has mentioned the same problem, so I know I'm not the only one who notices.

We missed you in Cle Elum over the weekend... I hope you didn't get stuck waiting in line for your free pen and co-logo flash drive... If you did, more power to ya, get those bad boys out there on craigslist to supplement your income! However, you might not want me to get fired, considering my freight capture alone probably pays for half your monthly salary.

Please accept most apologizing my humble communication disability cake.
  • Concerned · 5 months ago
#46- you have no idea what you are talking about and in my opinion -an idiot… These event’s you speak of is a sales supported program “no herd of support “would be there. You really are not too smart since your postings point a very good direction to who you are. What dept? Purchasing “ship confirming orders”, “Public Sector, “Enterprise”, or Sourcing? Who could be your inside sales rep???? Gee, not a very educated move on your part.. Do you play Chess? Let’s see, you captured enough in freight to pay ½ of a monthly salary that is a good give away! Let’s all hope that Corley, Marbena, and Ducatellia are out before we are… If Firoz opens his eyes. Zones is or was a great company that we all fight for, however things are changing and not necessarily for the best. All of the last mentioned? The best of your post is your reference to Cle Elum; do you understand this politics of Zones? Of course not, you live in a “Global” daydream and probably have no knowledge of these people and where there heads are buried. What is a humble discommunication cake? Have a good time eating it whatever the hell that is.
  • another concerned one · 5 months ago
Zones being at the top of such list is not a surprise for many of us. Besides wide spread incompetence at the highest level, or maybe because of it, we have the worst benefits package in the industry. The health care costs are high, the company decided to stop 401K payments until the end of the year, salary increases were halted indefinitely, and to put the cherry on top of this wonderful cake, top performers are being fired with some of the lamest excuses.
Oh, and this might be against some labor laws, but employees are asked to punch out for the day after 8 hours and continue working OFF THE clock until their work is done. I guess some of the incompetence from "up top" trickled into the middle management...
As far as pushing the blame on Portland, Auburn, Chicago, or India...I think we should all stand up for ourselves and demand better treatment!!
WE ARE ZONES...Firoz and the others are just the deep pockets taking all the profits. We want our company and dignity back!!
Firoz, and Corly!! How about share with your employees during this "time of need"???
  • One more for zones · 5 months ago
Zones being at the top of the list is not to far off in deed.

Firoz we work very hard for you and I can say that once the company was taken private things changed immensely most of our jobs have been sent india and every day I go to work it feels a little bit more grim around the office. Our spiffs are taken we are forced to purchase from people who will only give the company a kick back even if that means we as employees cant make any money and are told that is all for the greater good.

We just want things the back the way they were when things were optimistic and we all cared about one another and seeing each other succeed and do well.

At this point there is no reason for name calling or saying bad things about people in India we the people who built the company just need to realize that it is Firoz's company and he can do whatever it is he wants with it and if he runs it into the ground by getting rid of core people and outsourcing everything to india then so be it, it is his company.

All we can do is just look for a better home and let them have what they created instead of sticking around and trying to save something that looks like it is on its way to failure if things dont change.

    Right on #49 --
Just got back from depositing my big fat juicy Zones paycheck -- many many rupee. I use the biggest bank east of Tamil Nadu. I need all the rupee I can get my hands on to pay for my new 3 camel garage.
I have to question choosing "Nimish" as a pen name.
Seriously, your spifs are taken? Some buddies told me they'd been hearing a loud sucking sound around there at Zones, but I don't think they told me your spifs are taken now!!! You got it right, man. Find a better home. Zones is keeping you from making a living. Does that include contest trips? What about ball games or Rmerald Downs? Dude you've gotta do what's best for your family. There's plenty of other LAR's around Seattle, publicly traded, and non-spif-taking. Tell your customers why you're switching companies and they'll probably cheer you on.

Screw contest and trips I need to make money not some corporate copout such as a trip or a ballgame that is tax write off I need real money to pay my bills. Maybe they should move everything to india since you dont seem to give a damn about being treated fairly.

Fact of the matter is if you want to own and run a company in america then you need to treat your AMERICAN employees with some respect and make sure they are taken care of.

I am glad that you can afford your mud/elphant fecal hut but here we have a higher standard of living that is what makes this country great. I am sure you get paid great I am glad you can afford the lube that comes with it.

Your right about finding a better home then you can watch my client walk right off with me, soon your many rupees will turn into nothing.

To Shannon and all the other fools that keep posting positive lies about "Zones":

    * Some of your noses are so brown from being so far up your managers backside that you can't even smell your own breath anymore.

    * Kissing up by writing these posts (and using your real name, in hopes that a VP sees it) is a poor attempt at trying to get better transition accounts spoon fed to you. Too bad Hobday doesn't still work there, you could just sit on his lap for that, instead of writing a BS post about how great things are, when you ALL know how full of it everyone in management is over there.

    * Stop kissing-up in hopes of a management job. You're just an AE, and that's all you'll ever be good for to anyone over there, unless you enjoy being on your knees for most of the day, you'll never the job.

    * Zones doesn't pay it's employees what they have already accrued and earned in terms of salary and bonuses once they quit their jobs.

    * Zones is not a company anyone should STRIVE to work for... Speaking from experience, I know NOBODY that works there that actually enjoys their job, nor do I think anyone is being treated like the valued employee they should be treated like.

    * Zones likes to act like they're a "MBE" Minority Business Enterprise, when, in fact, they're a racist organization.

In fact, the only person to use their REAL name in these comments Shannon Christi is the most racist brown noser in the entire organization, which is why im sure her job is tightly secured at Zones.

To all those that still work there: Sorry!

To all those that are on the way out: Kudos!

To all those that are still lying to themselves about what kind of company they work for: You're stupid!

    Part I
About Zones Inc. more than half of these postings are about this company and there are obviously some internal issues that really need to be resolved.
Firoz, you can disagree with the results all you want but the evidence is pretty clear by all the postings. No matter what, YOU need to pay attention of what is being said!!! Zones used to be a proud place to work; a lot of people who built Zones up, from when the bottom when Zones made no money at all from Redmond and Renton locations to making stock public and having a pretty good run in Auburn location….we cared, we were family & friends, and wanted it to be successful. It all seemed to go downhill when CPCS merged with Zones and your started outsourcing to India. FIROZ, pay attention, you take, take and take from your US employees, and the last thing you do when you choose not to take any more as they proved their loyalty to you (see the postings they all state it), then you lay them off. I think it was mentioned as fired for the lamest excuses see #48, or told they’re position are no longer needed by Zones. Then you post that position for hire later with the same duties, change the title and lower the pay (remember the Operations Manager, posting)??? I think WA State or Christine Gregoire would love to hear about that since you both made televised promises about Zones!! Then you attempt to send the laid off employees job to India, where you have to hire many more to do a simple 1 man job here in the US. Are you really saving money if you have to hire so many more in India to do a 1 US person job?? I think WA State or Christine Gregoire would love to hear about that since you both made televised promises about Zones!! Then you attempt to send the laid off employees job to India, where you have to hire many more to do a simple 1 man job here in the US. Are you really saving money if you have to hire so many more in India to do a 1 US person job??

I think WA State or Christine Gregoire would love to hear about that since you both made televised promises about Zones!! Then you attempt to send the laid off employees job to India, where you have to hire many more to do a simple 1 man job here in the US. Are you really saving money if you have to hire so many more in India to do a 1 US person job?? These exact employees you fire with lame excuses/laid off , they built Zones for you, believed in you and in their Zones family that we would all worked hard to make Zones successful things would get better in the end. Isn’t that what you promised??? You got money hungry and forgot about your promises. Enough is enough and if it continues, you won’t have many caring, dedicated, loyal and hard working employees left, or is that your intention?? It seems like you sabotaged Zones on purpose. Let us all not forget, Firoz has wanted to dump Zones more than once and if it were not for Sean Hobday, he saved Zones.
Sean, take note again!!! Trent and others who were laid off who helped create processes to make Zones better and created the profitable Zones blanket… Maybe you can see the writing on the wall and step in and take over, or better yet…Sean, maybe you should leave Zones and create another company where it will be profitable and take care of its employees. As Zones should and promised it would.
  • WOW!! · 5 months ago
    Part III
NIMISH, or whatever your name is…..you should be ashamed of yourself as the people who have trained, they worked hard to ensure you had all documentation and training for you to do your job so Zones would stay successful!! It sounds like you could give a damn about Zones and people like you don’t deserve to work at Zones. You are an arrogant A$$ who should really be careful, because without the sales floor…you have no job and you are so stupid not to recognize that! There are a few (very few) proud and hard working folks in India but you are definitely not work of them. Nimish, people like you have ruined the very fabric that Zones was created on. I honestly blame Firoz for allowing people like you to even be employed as the strings you unraveled are the very blanket that Zones was made from by your loyal, dedicated, hard working and loyal US employees. So Nimish, keep on with your not giving a damn attitude and how you are all that good and better than your US counterparts….(and I find that very hard to believe in your arrogance since it takes about 5 of you to do the simplest of tasks, not jobs but tasks.) The US employees all know this since their jobs are not even close to the little tasks you do. Watch what happens, as your check and employment is the Zones blanket you stand on, the very blanket you are unraveling and are standing on. Also, I would assume the reason you hate our president, Mr. Obama is because he will put an end to the “oversees” outsourced work from US companies. Just know the programs he is starting is just the beginning steps to put you out of work, thus why Firoz cowarded and went private to try and find a work around. Remember this is just a temporary fix. If you don’t understand the blanket example, try the one, it will make better sense. Imagine you are standing in the middle of a bridge; you light a fire on both ends, what happens??? This is exactly what you and people like you with your attitude are doing to Zones.
  • WOW!! · 5 months ago
    Part IV and Final
Firoz, Zones used to hire the very best…..now you can’t say the same because you have so many people like “Nimish” (whether they are in India, Portland, Chicago, Auburn and the little satelite offices in the US) you are blinded and can't see it. You allowed the lowering of the hiring standard and now you get to deal with the consequences. The people you (Firoz) put in higher management and the people who don’t care that are hired to work at Zones, are unraveling the blanket. I know you have something to catch you if the blanket unravels and you fall. Firoz, what about the employees who were dedicated, loyal and hard working for you?

To #35 you are so right. Never have I felt more disrespected in my life than the short period of time I spent at Global Scholar. Kal get a grip: THIS IS AMERICA! I walked out of that place with pleasure to get my point across. That's what happens when one of your managers, has the audacity to tell me I'm going to work 6pm-2:30am on Thanksgiving day, instead my 2 pm-10 pm shift. Besides, it's no secret that the "tutors", most of whom are in India, are actually DOING students assignments, not helping them. Your managers are disrespectful and it will be a miracle if you stay in business!
  • Zones, are you kidding me??? · 5 months ago
This again is about Zones and their ability to make everyone feel apreciated...NOT.
Just to clear the air about some of the postings here...
CPCS was a thryving company at the time of the so called merger. We had and still have a lot of big corporate accounts. And the life of the CPCS employee was good. We were treated like family with real benfits, and the managers and executives were very close to us. Then came Zones and washed all that away.
It was and is a downwards spiral ever since. We had profit sharings...ever heard of that ZONES??? of course not you beloved Firoz takes it all in now. We had REAL healthcare coverage at a reasonable cost, now it's just like any other department in the company - we put money into ZONES and they take the profit, THEN they buy healthcare coverage for us...The list could go on and on...
So, all of you "upset" Zones employees who are ofended by these postings...YOU DESERVE what Zones does to you!!! Enjoy!
  • Chicago are you kidding me???? · 5 months ago
#58- If your company was doing so well, why merge? You merged because it was only a matter of time until the limited resources you had burned out And, Zones was a close family until the merge happened just to let you know. Granted, CPCS did bring in some $’s that helped but along with that upper management was left to individuals THERE who have eliminated key people here in Auburn. The executive management doesn’t care or have a clue who helped build Zones. How many from Chicago have been laid off? Chicago does whatever is NEEDED in order to keep their employees. I would hope you are glad to have a job and be part of this company that is spiraling out of control thanks to the management delagateed from there. We have lost some of the best support people I have ever worked with, and when I need them it is felt…Deeply. This isn’t about the merge, it’s about outsourcing and who gets to stay and who has to go. Zones has been a company where we all were family and the support staff kicked A$$ to make sure sales was taken care of, customers happy and the company didn’t suffer. Bill Wenzel, Viki Cox, Trent Tucker, Yvonne Price, Fred Engmann, Jennifer Butler, Jayde Evans and Rick Booker were the best of the best. They ALWAYS came up with solutions using all factors and resources necessary to ensure all parties were satisfied. These are the casualties that need to come back, no matter…Beg them Firoz, and we need the passion. My thoughts- management needs to be controlled from Auburn, we are diplomatic unlike there and, anyone in Chicago that thinks the way things are going isn’t going to fail OUR company needs a nice kick in the backside and is well deserved. In parting, Laurie Kramer is Awesome also….Hope this doesn’t jinx her….Move her around and in truth SHE should be at the top, director would be a fitting title for customer service. And a note to "nimish" bite me and hope there are Typhoid shots
  • hey 59 · 5 months ago
Both parties named in this report/survey are form your area : Zones as a company and Firoz as the CEO...look at the numbers (or $$ figures) I think Chicago still pulls their share...What are you doing out west besides whining? the company is going to fail because our beloved Firoz is pocketing too much now that he is the owner of a private (ha, get it?) company that we all help biuld (all including us, you, portland, etc) It's easy to put the blame on Chicago, but we are left with a couple of sales guys, a couple of inside sales and a few support people out here. The warehouse is the only place where it looks full. we also lost a lot of people, some were let go, some just left, but you don't see that because we don't whine, we pull together and still get the job done...with the resources we have.
Anyways..I don't blame you ignorats out there... I blame the ONE who stuffs his pockets...say hello to shannon (#30) you two deserve each other.

It has nothing to do with it has nothing to do with out west, mid west, down south or whatever. Zones has become about corporate greed period.

When we the economy got slow we let people go, not becuase we needed to survive but becuase upper managment is to afraid that they are going to miss out on there cut.

How much do you need Firoz, give back to your employees who bust there butt for you and make Zones what it is.

    Zones = corporate greed
    corporate greed = faliure

We are all just scared that we are going to be fired if we say something but please try and remember this is our company too we work hard to see it succeed and we all just keep being taken advantage of.

Amusing how this little blog about CEO performance became an outlet for the many disgruntled Zoners in the world.

The dissatisfaction isn't new, isn't something from the last 1-2 years, this has been the Zones status-quo for nearly 2 decades. Been there, seen that, I'm an ex-Zoner from way back.

Non-sensical layoffs (who's expensive today?), making business moves seemingly based on whatever random article senior management has read (outsourcing) or just flat copying a competitors business practice without bothering to know how to execute it...this isn't new, this is the Zones of Filroz since day one.

I miss reading the public quarterly reports where it's all "growth, growth, growth!" but the TOTAL company sales are always the same! Fricken' hilarious. The total sales numbers haven't really grown to any extent since Sadru was forced out...with the exception of getting the Microsoft account, (which may not have been profitable) and the acquisition of CPCS.

How deep in debt were the people at CPCS anyway? Selling a company for less than what would be 3 years profit?? That never made sense...CPCS ownership must have been mental or deep in personal debt.

The first time Zones actually made a noticable PROFIT was after acquiring CPCS...didn't anyone notice the profit figure was exactly what CPCS had been making? I'm incredibly surprised Zones hasn't totally undone that and returned to break-even.

Y’all have fun…but you have to realize that since “Phil” booted Sadru there has been only ONE employee who wasn’t expendable…Filroz himself. To Fil, you Todos are just an expense, your contributions in the past…are in the past, if you aren’t spending more of your day sucking up than working, then the clock on your Zones career is ticking. Keep an empty box near your desk…you’re probably next.

Take some satisfaction in this: I think Fil actually reads these blogs...and they piss him off to no end.

    Aren't Thursday nights cool?

Have you sales guys looked at other resellers in the Seattle area? I left Zones about a year ago to work at a different reseller. They more than double your base, improve your commission schedule, and, yes, you keep your spifs. Some months you're paid base plus, and big months you're paid straight commission, whichever pays you more, just like at Zones. Most of the vendor reps are the same too. One area Zones is better, or at least different, is Zones' ZU sales training, more open forum, role-playing, etc. But then again Booker is awesome and irreplaceable as a training manager. Is he still the trainer there? Gigi was funny too. She even helped me years after I joined Zones whenever I needed to create complicated quotes using Excel instead of ZAC. Ever hit ship on a half million dollar order in ZAC and then wake up in the middle of the night not sure if you checked the "hold to complete" button? You know what I'm talking about. Anyway, another way my employer is different from Zones is my company fires poorly performing sales reps. Zones found a way to salvage lower performing reps and created S-division specifically for them. In this way, Zones seems pretty caring. I had two friends who got transferred to the newly created S-division while I was at Zones. They were ashamed of it, but at least they got to keep their jobs. Plus, they both eventually found different avenues to pursue.

#51 By and large, Indians bike or walk, they don't have camels, and they certainly don't have "camel garages." Nimish is obviously playing the devil's advocate, and he's getting under folks' skin. Don't get me wrong though, I feel for the support people still at Zones. What are there like three of them now? One of them goes by two different names though so maybe that makes four. That would be cool if she got two paychecks. And #51, I'm glad you have a client by the way, I really am.

#52 Would you man up already and quit bashing that Shannon girl. So maybe reading what she wrote was a little bit annoying, or tends to make you gag, or drink the memory away and pretend it never happened, what have you, who cares? Whoever she is she just sounds like a young kid excited about her job. Don't you remember being excited about that very first job after college, and possibly being a little overzealous? Or were you magicly the cool tenured guy from day 1?

    Abandon Ship~

Sales: You will never get there. Look at SeaTab and do the math. You can see it. You know it’s never going to happen for you. Quit ignoring the fact that you can see plain as day in SeaTab. It’s only going to get worse. You can see it already. Your support staff continues to head on a downward spiral to India. ZAC is a joke. It’s the Winchester house at this point, one ad on after another, doors to nowhere. If you get word that the big boys in the Sales game are pulling out---go with them. There is a plan in place I assure you. Look at the top 5 Reps in ZCS ---watch what they do---they have a plan for when this thing comes crashing down. GO---The customers will follow you.

Portland Office is doomed. Thanks for the hard work down there but your accounts are coming to Auburn, that’s what happens when you start new reps a 45k base—and blow all your capital on a Sexual Harassment Settlement. The Portland experiment was a disaster. Didn’t Portland have a support and training staff once? Look around at that place it’s a ghost town now. Firoz has threatened to shut Portland down countless times…it’s only a matter of time. Ask yourself? Why does that call center exist? It was to get new blood on the phones. See a lot of new blood coming in there now? Don’t lie to yourself!

You do not see real cost. 1% uplift is a lie. Uplift is whatever we think we can get away with without the reps asking to many questions. You already know this---you have sourced something before only to have is skued up with 6-8% uplift over the quote you got directly. Not a mistake---we just got caught. They are given money to pay as SPIFS from the manufacturer---but they keep it instead. Why do you think Zones is OK with selling at Cost---they make the $$$ elsewhere. Kick back after Kick Back after Kick Back.

    .

Vendors: Stop paying $3000-$5000 to come here. Reps don’t listen to what you have to say. They go to Vendor fairs for the free pens and in hopes that you will get them some leads. If you want us to get reps to sell your product… find a way to get the reps paid outside of Zones. Zones is keeping all the money. The reps sell what Zones forces them to sell….you can talk/train the reps until you are blue in the face but it will do no good.

OVR: How much are you making? Find out how much the manufacturer actually pays to have you staffed. It’s usually around 60k. If you aren’t getting 60--Zones is keeping the rest. Why do you think Zones is OK with selling at Cost---they make the $$$ elsewhere. Kick back after Kick Back after Kick Back.

Management: Stop acting like you all have business degrees and own up to the fact that you were successful as an AE because you brown nosed you way into transition accounts from your manager. Then when you had a nice fat book and realized you still weren’t making the money they promised you would---you went down the management path to be “safe” and try and make some money there. Just another lie you talked yourself into---even though the proof is looking you back in the face on Seatab.

Managers--we can see your top heavy book. We know why your book is top heavy. You know why the book is Top Heavy.
Frioz has no clue. The Senior Management Team is the ones pulling the strings. Most of the SMT folks are pretty sharp---but pretty loyal to keeping themselves and Firoz rich.

Firoz—the SMT make fun of you, they roll your eyes at you, they are embarrassed by the decisions you make and the things you ask them to do. The SMT has loose lips in regards to challenging your thinking. However—you do pay well at the executive level and so they press on. The staff will continue to cheer you at events and gatherings---but now it is because we fear you not because we embrace you.

Support Staff: Where all your friends? They are disappearing and you continue to buy into the lie. The fact is you work for a morally corrupt company; it wasn’t your colleagues fault they got let go---even though you still try and justify it in your mind. Zones has gone bad. ZONES HAS GONE BAD.

It’s not the economy people. Don’t buy it. Times are tough but look at the Bentley your CEO’s rolls. Times aren’t that tough. Firoz has other investments he fears will hit him hard and Zones is taking the brunt of it. This company is built on handwork but that foundation has been replaced by lies –it will slowly crumble. ZCS reps will walk and it will all end.

    Firos…Seattles worst CEO.
ZONES….Seattles worst company to work for.

Firoz quit stealing from us we want our spiffs just like this BS that reps have to hit a certain percentage before the spiffs are paid but yet the manufacture still pays zones the spiff....illegal maybe??

Zones is going to fail if there sales reps dont stop getting stolen from I am thinking of walking as I know my clients will follow.

Oh and guess what did some checking non compete only applies to manufacturing companies in washington.

You had better start making things right, class action law suit....never a good thing
  • reply to were are my spiffs · 5 months ago
This is a reply to "were are my spiffs"... the non-compete clause will not take effect if you are laid off. A lot of companies attempting to rehire ex-Zones employees may not know this information and it is not binding if laid off or if it is your only source of income, as long as you don't quit. If you quit, well you are correct it only applies to manufacturing companies. You might want to double check to see if it is your only source of income or if you have a different position (not what you were doing at Zones) even with a manufacturing company; does it still apply? I believe it does not. Good luck if you leave Zones, I wish you the best! You should let the rest of the Zoners/ex-Zoners (the hard working ones, you know who they are) know once you get settled and if it is a good place, maybe they might just follow!!

I am tired of never getting any kind of a raise and zones Senior team pocketing everything.

I am tired of seeing reps ship a quater of what I do but yet there base is way higher then mine; why am I forced to pay for them for.

I am tired of making excuses to my clients on why there shipping is is an outrage but I barely get nothing from that.

I am tired of how the floor mangers just dance around and try and quite you down when you catch lies.

I am tired of the next button get over it already how long will it take to realize that the only reason ZAC is in place is to help hide margin from reps like that BS we add the uplift for you but it is always 5 times higher then bid costs.

I am tired of brown nosers and people willing to give sexual favors getting all the good accounts, then watching those people burn the accounts and never get any kind of repercussion for it. Then those accounts go to other people and those people are harrased about why they no longer buy from zones.

I am just tired all together but we all need to work so we just put up with it for now at least until the company goes under.

This is horrible. Oh god a CEO of company got a worse rating than most of the others... News flash some one has to be there. I am a former employee of Zones and loved it there my manager blew ass and got canned shortly after I did go figure. Zones is not a bad place to work or get fired from. Firoz may pocket too much cash, who the F*** cares he owns the thing!!! It's his he started it from scratch along with many of his other business. Upper management probably does get too many raises and they have inflated paychecks when they come on. I was a top producing rep in the S division not the top but top 5 consistantly. I got canned for attendence. But there has to be some one on the bottom of the list and if it's Firoz Lilja and his management team so be it. This is outrageous that this is such a big deal and employees of Zones and former employees of Zones choose to either defend or bash Zones. Stuff happens. Now don't get me wrong Zones has messed up plenty Trent getting the can is horrible the training staff shown the door or part of the training staff. But these are bad economic times we are in decisions have to be made. None of these posting are going to matter... Firoz is not going anywhere they are not going to pay more toward your health care. Portland and Chicago are still going to exist and if business decions have to be made to cut, layoff or fire employees based on anything they choose they will. The hole corporate system is jacked and ALL the CEO's good or bad need to be held personally responsible for business decisions they make. They should not be able to cut or fire 10 people or 20 or 60 or what ever with out any backlash by our government or some one. CEO's in general take a big cut of profits but never any of the loses. I hope this changes. Firoz is not a bad guy his management team are not bad people it's just some one needs to be at the bottom.

Firoz is clueless in this business - it shows in the inability to gain respect for Zones locally. Most people have never heard of the company and do not know anything about what they do - even though it was a public company for many years before recently being taken private by Firoz. They've languished for so long under his direction.

He cruises in his Bentley and makes his money off other investments/real estate - Zones is more of a side activity that never really seemed to be a business he was good for but he still keeps them going, somehow. The company has historically and consistently run with about 20% (or greater) turnover - good training ground for other companies. Few years ago they made the move to Auburn from Renton to try and save a few bucks and they've paid much, much more in the lack of quality/educated/talented employees looking to work across from the SuperMall. Lot of bad decisions trying to make/save a buck.

    And ...

It seems good people are getting canned while other good people (ok, the guy who's business helped this company survive) was only taken off the mgmt team after a serious sexual harassment settlement? Despite the wrongdoing and payout ... he's a keeper? Indicates the business ethics over bottomline.

Now, here and there a few great people came out of the team - but when you are hiring people who worked at McDonalds, retail, college dropouts, etc to try and take on a professional corporate/enterprise IT sales role it's no wonder why the turnover. At times they've gone through hiring spurts training 10-20 people a month only to find themselves at the same level the next year due to all the turnover. Hire better, keep em! Don't hire as low as possible and see what sticks. Really, that's where the managers have been coming from and they are bad for business!

Firoz- if you are reading these posts and ever cared about us and the people who are have been let go- speak up. It seems there is a lot of unhappiness, give us some inspiration AKA hope. Are you putting your SMT under the microscope and making sure they really know what they are doing & will take the company in the direction it needs to go? If that is the case and you come out thinking they are competent to ensure we “take flight” there is great concern. I know you have passion, but was that passion for us and all those who cared? Your speeches over the years make it difficult to believe you never cared about the people and Zones. BTW, on the SMT side your sales force rocks so don’t waste too much time under the microscope. Hobday is a missing link in this key picture. Give that man more voice and let him do what he does best. Get management back to Auburn where they know how to operate on a large scale that Zones is accustomed to.

I do think of you as a nice guy, but you don't see all the things everyone is doing to try and make Zones a better working environment. You need to bring back those you laid off that helped make you profitable and cared to share your envisions. You know who they are, trying to save a buck is not working and others are speaking up and are outraged of decisions being made. You are taking the grunt of the blogs because in reality you are the CEO and are in complete control but it appears some of the upper management you have listed are making things worse. Take control of Zones and make it right again.

All this is true too we need to get hobday back to the level he was at.

We all know what he did was wrong but SMT shook when he was around and he kept everything running smooth, very motivational.

We need someone actually running Zones at our corporate location. Tom might be ok as VP but he is doing nothing for us.

We need someone in power that is around that can call the shots but also knows what sales is about Hobday was perfect I am sure Tom has a contract but maybe you can put hobday at a C level or something.

we just want to see our company start going in the right direction, it needs to be carefully monitored now that the economy is coming back.

Zones is very good at making sure the employees dont know what might be happening. For example, blocking this site from access at all of its locations.
But what is happening at the Portland branch? A lawsuit etc., rumors have been Zones plans on shutting down 1 or 2 locations. Since this has become an open forum, those that know please make public what is happening. Is Zones ready to shut its doors?

PDX was Jeff Walters baby. He is gone. It was a slow downward spiral since he left. Robert tried for awhile to be excited about Portland, but it wasn't his project, and now it's his mess.
Cox was not and still is not ready for an asighnment of this size. Portland is over. Sex, Drugs, lies, and lack of sales. That will be Portlands legagcy.

    Q4 PDX closes it's doors.

If Portland does go down, it is with good riddance. The theory, as we were told, was to open the office in Portland for a higher calibre talent than could be found in Auburn. Unfortunately they promoted the wrong guy to lead the office. The managagers in Portland are a disgrace. If management thinks high calibre talent is going to be motivated to work for the inexperienced, unsoffisticated and small minded individuals better suited to pumping gas who have been in control then they should save millions by continuing those practices in Auburn rather than spending millions to spread that cancer to other regions. I heard recently that a guy was promoted to management who could never get to work on time, and never had the numbers to garner any respect. Now he's a manaager and still can't get to work on time more than twice a week. Wow. I never knew anything about Firoz. I think he came to Portland maybe once in the time I was there. Robert McGowen came down maybe once a month. Perhaps if they were around more to see the kind of leadership (and I use that word lightly) the Portland office was subjected to, then changes could have been made when it could actually have done some good. It might not be too late to correct course in Portland but it would require the replacement of all the management team and there's no way anyone at Zones has the testicular fortitude to pull that trigger.

If you need to ask the question #100 than there is a problem. There may be a BIG meeting about this blog, but I highly doubt it. If there is a meeting you will be told how valuable you are and what a great success you help make Zones. Either way, reading the posts should alert you to a serious situation in a company that used to be great and has no clear path for the employees that put time in to keep it afloat. What to believe or what not to believe? Trust me, update your resume and get it out in circulation.

    Quite enough already.
Been watching and waiting for this inane blog to end, but there are five or six disgruntled ex-Zones employees who have nothing better to do than post contrived and self-serving diatribes that somehow make their own selves feel better about personal failure or just being victims of established corporate protocol.
Each time I read new junk, I get a knee-jerk response to reply, but I just don’t have the time to waste… until tonight.
“Take off the rose colored glasses” said, “There may be a BIG meeting about this blog…”
This statement perfectly illustrates the confused self-perception of small-minded people posting on the internet.
Why have a “big meeting” about a small pack of ex-employees?
You all think that since this is on the web that there are 5 million readers watching you vomit.
Truth is… probably fewer than 15 people who have jobs are watching this… only in dismay.
“In the Know”: You lost any credibility with your first sentence; you went downhill from there.
“Bad for Biz”: See above comment for “In the Know.”
“Poisoned Portland”: You are the Maraschino Cherry on this ugly blog sundae. Apparently “testicular” and “fortitude” are the only words you ran spell check on.
You also should have looked them up in the dictionary because you have no idea what either word means. If you sent ANY communications to prospects or customers in the eloquent “calibre” of your posting here, please stop hallucinating that your failure can be blamed on any manager… middle, senior, or executive.
You just need to get your GED.
Unlike the majority of the contributors to this inane, inciting, ill-informed and wasteful blog, I have important things to do tonight, and then I need to get up in the morning to go to work… at Zones.
Also… I did not want to submit to this blog for fear of promoting inane replies. NO one has time for this; you, me… no one.
Just let it go. Use your talent to hone your resume; you need that.
We ARE Zones, and zONEs is… one.

We just celebrated the 2nd Annual Zones Jubilee here in Chennai.
And guess who won the "Jewel of Zones" award??? Yes it is I, and I thank each and every one of you. I wish you were there to hear my speech. Can we not learn to share the Northern Hemisphere?

Do not worry, for we in Tamil are blazing a path for you to follow. So your national debt is 80% of your GDP, do not fret! It could be worse. My Turkish friend has a saying -- Biz bize hizmet icin beyaz hos geldiniz. That was the Golden Motto of our Jubilee today.

So some of you write that you just want to have an income, which is admirable by the way, and you are unsure you're working for the right company. Ask yourselves the following 2 yes or no questions:

Was Hobday a male cheerleader in college?

At night, when Firoz falls to sleep, do you think he dreams in English?

"Zones Expands with New Portland Office"

    Market Wire, November, 2005

Zones, Inc. (NASDAQ: ZONS), a leading information technology (IT) reseller with headquarters in Auburn, Wash., today announced it will open a new Portland sales office. Zones has signed a letter of intent to lease office space near the trendy Pearl District on NW 23rd Avenue. The Company is actively recruiting local professionals to join Zones’ team of dedicated sales people. Zones will begin training new sales account executives in the Portland office in January 2006, and the office is scheduled to officially open on February 1, 2006.

Zones plans to hire up to 50 account executive professionals in Portland during the first quarter of 2006, with as many as 50 additional hires planned for 2006. Qualified applicants are encouraged to send their resumes to Oregon.resumes@zones.com, or apply online at www.zones.com/careers. The Company will also continue to recruit account executives for its Auburn, Wash. headquarters.
  • Zones has a bad taste · 4 months ago
Zones is obviously one company a professional does not want to work for if they want a long standing career. How disappointing that Firoz doesn’t give a crap about any of you and will use up all of his employees resources to make more money. Shameful, but he does own Zones so have fun being puppets. Post # 115 stick it, you are reading these posts every night so there must be some information that the little brain in your head is looking for….OH and you have no idea if this site has “made an impact on Zones” YET. Let’s just see what sales are in Q3 and Q4.You are a little mushroom that needs squashed and I would be more than happy to participate with that.

    http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=...

    Hope that helps.

While I'm sure your experience earning your GED was life changing, I'll be quite content with my edumucation.

And yes, calibre is a variant of caliber. It's from a little known language called English.

While you're patting yourself on the back for typing your "BLOG" in Word so you could spell check it, maybe get a little "hip" and understand that poking fun of spelling on a blog is akin to complaining that kids today play their music to gosh darn loud.

Now run along and do whatever work you find to be important and self gratifying. You certainly aren't gratifying any of the employees you should be leading and who are directly responsible for your paycheck.

I'll be waking up and making better money than could ever be made at Zones and without having to cma or kiss anyone elses. It's only a matter of time before other Portlanders of high calibre do the same. Although, if not much has changed, that would be about five of them.

As a former employee of Zones, I think this is horrible. Have people not heard the saying "Don't burn your bridges"?

You may not like what is happening at Zones, but you do have a choice (because we do live in America)- You can leave your job at Zones and look for another fit somewhere else.

I do agree that Sean Hobday, Trent Tucker and Rick Booker received a raw deal. If the three of them decide to start a new company I'd like to be hired.

  • feeling uncomfortable · 4 months ago
#124, I didn't realize that HR tells people what you report. I only reported Jen GM's carpool vouchers in exchange for personal favors program because I assumed there would be no reprisal. Did HR tell her I reported her? Half of my row reported a support lady who kept touching us, and she changed her name the very next week. Is that because HR told her that we reported her? We can tell it's the same person anyway, just a different name now. Back when Leianna pressured us for personal favors in exchange for transitioned accounts, did you tell her we reported her too? If somebody takes my time clock or whatever, I don't really care, but I don't feel comfortable now approaching HR with my concerns anymore if HR is just going to break my confidentiality.
  • Jen GM · 4 months ago
Are you all really this cowardly and mentally challenged that you actually believe the crap you're writing? I never did anything wrong, I never received any personal favors from ANYONE, (I don't even have a clue about this whole car pool thing...fill me in, I'd like to know what I did please, it sounds like it must be a good fictional story...) and I won't even respond to the ridiculous comment made by #122 & #124, accept to say that my friendships were NEVER with "benefits" (not that it would be any of your beeswax anyway...talk about gossips....I would really appreciate if you would grow some "kiwis" and "man up" to sign your name. What are you guys 13??? It sure seems like it, its amazing that you all have the money to put makeup on both of your faces (just to clarify for those who are mentally challenged, this means you are 2-faced.)

How did this go from being about the Worst CEO's to me? I only said "You may not like what is happening at Zones, but you do have a choice (because we do live in America)- You can leave your job at Zones and look for another fit somewhere else."

Anyone out there got the "kiwis" to respond with your real name...can't wait to see!!!
  • Not Accurate · 4 months ago
#126 HR has not and won't divulge any of those things that get reported. When people are involved though it is sometimes required to notify them. We are not allowed to just divulge that around at all. And then other things like the "Healthy Roads" issues we don't even have anyway to look at them.
  • Liar · 4 months ago
HR has the biggest mouths in the company. The answer given above was classic Zones Rhetoric. The perfect answer. But HR employees abuse their power at Zones everyday. Nothing that happens in HR is private.
  • Let's keep it real!!! · 4 months ago
I think we (Zoners and ex Zoners) are pulling away from what this blog is really about. The short comings of Zones and how Firoz and those in high management positions should be paying attention. No reasons to have a pissing contest over the stuff that was taken care of...it should be more of what Firoz and upper management should be taking care of. Zones needs to focus on making it better for those who are still there and plan to stick it out there! You have to admit that it is funny that yet again, Zones has blocked this site from being viewed like they have on other situations (MySpace, Yahoo Blogs!) This means that this blog is making some uneasy and this needs to stay in the real of what is wrong. Yes, there seems to be some disgruntled ex Zones employees, but it does seem like some of them did infact care where they worked and they should not be taken any less serious than any of us still working here! The concerns and the seriousness of this blog is taking some effect or Zones would not block us from viewing this site! Al, glad you posted!!! Hopefully, some will take you up on that offer...you have any thing to help our support employees??? I feel bad that those who work hard to get my orders out might be next to get the boot again!
  • few ex employees??? · 4 months ago
I can tell you that Zones has serious issues...80-90% of the people currently employed are very upset with the direction the company is going. In Chicago, the only people happy with this are the ones related in some way or another to the CEO's pick (famiy and friends plans have a new meaning). There's no time to do your work when you have to cover up your son's mistakes...Why Isn't the inside sales manager doing anything about it???
  • Al Dunlap · 4 months ago
Very light response to my offer, as in a total of 3 messages. I called the one guy who sounded like he had enough production to possibly justify pursuing, but it turned out he had "inflated" his portable revenue numbers pretty substantially when he left his message. In fact, when I returned his call he sounded like he'd just gotten back from a 2 Live Crew concert.
Anyway, we don't have a support people location local to the Seattle area. They're not in Kathmandu or Mexico or anything, but they're not here in Seattle. To my knowledge they're not getting fired full tilt but they're constantly making titular changes and rearranging them. Actually, I think one group did get the ax about a year ago. They were sort of like the bid/mod group. Yeah, go figure.
So is Zones still taking your spifs? That's just wrong man. When sales has pockets full of those starbucks giftcards and junk to give support folks for doing a good job, you don't have to worry about receptionists trying to sell sexual favors on company property or whatever your HR people were writing about. It's called the "trickle down theory."
  • Now Who's the Liar? · 4 months ago
HR has never condoned the sale of sexual favors anywhere on the company property during business hours. And just like any other policy this DOES include the parking lot and designated smoking areas so quit asking. Plus furthermore any sex at offsite partner events is also considered company property and should be reported the next business day. Sex is part of your initial training so don't blame HR.
  • Spifs · 4 months ago
    Al,

Spifs are still being taken all of the time. Someone has to stay wealthy at Zones, But who can blame them they are just "giving themselves a raise" like they insist we should do
  • Al Dunlap · 4 months ago
The spif situation definitely sounds bad over there. I think they only used to take 20% out of the spifs on your spif manager list. We share the same reps for most vendors and when I ask them about your spifs getting taken, they seem don't always seem aware that's going on. Obviously they don't want to spend spif money if it's not going to incent the reps to recommend their brand. The vendors just suggest you report the sales to them manually.
Usually guys on my row would just manually report large dollar spifs because the 20% would justify using the manual process. It can be time consuming plus it's a pain when they 1099 ya at the end of the year. Either give your vendor rep the sale details or claim the spif on the vendor's website. You know the drill, for instance, hp junk go to hp portal, click on promo's, pick the part numbers you sold fill in the details and submit. Just make sure you claim them frequently because whoever reports the sale first gets the spif. EDI stuff gets reported every couple days, Chicago stuff is easier because they take forever to report. A few of us trained our girlfriends to claim our spifs manually. We gave them our sale details and they'd do the rest. Anyway, there's just a couple of suggestions so that you can keep your spifs. No reason to give up your raise ya know, especially since everybody is saying that things are not that great there now. Also FYI keep an eye on your software renewals and stay ahead of them. Some of the SW publishers are actually telling us who to call about Zones renewals now because they think Zones isn't pushing their brand anymore.

You camel haters over there in the US remind me of when CDW "realigned" their SMB group geographically. Remember how many nice accounts we won back then? Well these days, CDW must be winning them back from us. Perhaps it is time to complete the Hobday transition by filling the void with AJ.
  • Whatever. · 4 months ago
    #136 Post

Ha Ha Ha, AJ filling the void? Might you think to put Linda Marbena in that mix? Do you not know of the “Procurement Nazi”? Firoz has given so much trust in her that it’s ridiculous. Stop with the Sean Hobday crap, he is real and Chicago isn’t. Someone should ask the forbidden “nepotism” question to understand the force of powers that should not BE. Can someone look and where her SON is in the company and how he got there???? And, quit the camel bull its lame.
  • Nimish · 3 months ago
It was Hobday who compared CDW's geographic realignment to Zones putting AJ in charge of Sales, because that misstep in strategy was the brainchild of CDW's CIO. Hey you are totally right about Firoz' penchant for the ridiculous. Firoz is the only reason Jacola is jumping ship this Friday. That was a terrific conversation when Firoz told Jacola he was going to WAC him. Jacola just said OK and walked off. It's written in Jacola's contract that Firoz can't WAC him. "Tough times," Firoz. Take a lesson from my buddy Al Dunlap.
Hobday might be real as you would say, but wouldn't you say he'll only be half real after Jacola's departure on Friday? And take it easy on the camel jockeys s'il vous plait.

I'LL SAVE YOU THE TOUBLE OF GOING TO BACK TO LOOK AT POST 66. HERE IT IS

WELL THE FIRST PART IS COMING TRUE. THE TOP ZONES REP HAS LEFT, BUT I DON'T THINK OTHERS WILL FOLLOW.

THE 2ND PART OF POST 66 IS AS FOLLOWS

Sean, we know you are reading these posts. You have a way to grow business and morale but with all the damage thats been done, can Zones be saved? Seems like Firoz is getting his wish to finally dump Zones. Jeremy used to work under you, the fact he left says a lot. Maybe you should consider starting your own company with Trent, Fred and Booker! Many would follow who are hard working and loyal to growth!! Maybe hire some of the laid off to help out. Morale on the floor is bad. It is scary to walk into work not knowing if your job will be there at the end of the day! Makes things hard to focus when you we are wondering what is next!
  • So far, still in support... · 3 months ago
It's kinda sad (sorry Jen) that you can tell who's who of those that are of some importance to say anything on here, and still disregard the fact that so many people are, frankly - PISSED.
I am in a support/merch role, and the loss of Jeremy is frightening. I'm continually thinking of Al's offer, and seriouly considering ditching what i once thought would be my CAREER.
Zones used to be a great place to work, and I think it has a chance of getting back there. But not much. I used to love my boss, love that i could move anywhere in the company, and everyday was different. Now it's just holding on to my seat as tight as i can because i have a family to feed.
Nobody should fool themselves by drinking the corporate water, and thinking that life at Zones is that fantastic. ITS A JOB. Everyone hates some aspect of thier job. But this is ALOT of people and ALOT of hate. Is it all Firoz's fault? No, just that he's the only one that could have sincerely stopped the downward spiral - by putting those in place who make/keep an impact on the sales floor.
But it's nerve wracking when i see the term notices, and people IM'ing me of who has left - and those are jobs that can't just be filled with 5 members of the india team. (India, you do great at following instruction - it'd be great if you learned to troubleshoot too.)
We're all freaked from the chain of events. Whether we come out of it as "We are still Zones" or if we come out of it all on the bread lines talking about our experiences together, things WILL change. It's ignorance to think that things won't.
I've made some great friends at Zones over the years, and will treasure those people and my experiences. This is not how i wanted to end this career.
I was fought fcr on the sales floor, and now praised in my merch role. I am a proud Zoner. But this makes me shudder. Upper management - please put your latte's down a second and help what used to be a great place to go in the morning.

A job is no free ride and I see it all the time at Zones, people rely on a base thinking that is what they make per year; you can raise your income if you actually do your job and do it well,of course I am talking sales. To all you friggen free loaders that bitch, you have no reason to bitch, you are only bitching because you suck and think that all your "false" talk time is going to make you money. Wake up you fucking morons and do your goddamn job. If I had it my way, at least half of you fuckheads would be gone tomorrow. Be thankful that Firoz has supported your lame lazy idiotic asses for this long. The only mistake I believe Firoz made was to start hiring people at a higher base pay. The intent was good (retention), but it backfired because all the people hired at 40k or greater are the worst performing and most unmotivated assholes to grace the doors as Zones and should be walked out immediately if they can't pay for themselves. Good luck finding a job in this economy jackasses. Business models change in downed economies, jobs are cut and that is inevitable, but Jesus Christ people, pull your weight and do your best to help the company suceed and be thankful you have a job tomorrow. Quit worrying about what other people say or post and do your job. No one can predict the future, but for now it is what it is! do you job or leave. There are plenty of people out there to take your place. Oh yeah, and all you disgruntled MF's, go get another job and then maybe you can get your life back so you can quit wasting your time here trying to make Zones look bad, you are all truly assholes that need another way to vent.

Nice, its easy to take words from such genius. Not even a word into your post and we know why you are preaching your own greatness.

    COMPENSATION

p.s. what was Jaccolas average talk time? Oh that's right, it doesn't matter!
  • FLABERGASSED · 3 months ago
haha! Far from genius pal! I create my own money 149. Jacola left on his own terms and made more money than most people there. Do you think he got there by BSing with people, or do you think his hard work paid off? He was hardly in the office and had face time with customers and worked hard for his money. Keep thinking that talk time doesn't matter and you will find yourself looking for a job soon.

    Friken Idiot

FLABERGASSED: You must be an angry drunk or clinically insane to actually believe anything you wrote. At least half of the posts here are from support people who were let go due to outsourcing or that lovely phrase management uses "your position has been eliminated". Get off your high horse and enjoy going down with the Zones ship.

You are an asshole. I worked for Zones for many, many years and made/saved the company TONS of money while doing my job with stellar ability and I CARED. I did not deserve to be let go because I sucked. You ever think that other reasons (boss is an idiot and lives in the correct geographic area) could come into play. There are many people at Zones and ones that have been let go that would kick your sorry ass because they KNOW your words are not true in my situation. Actually I probably pulled your lame backside out of some unsavory situations and made you look good to your customer. So, you are a MF and if I saw you right now I would KICK your lame ass. There are people Firoz oppointed to "run" the company who are watching it go into the toilet with not care in the world.
You are a dumbass, and you too will see the light someday.

IT'S SPELLED FLABBERGASTED -- YOU FUCKTARD
  • Ha Ha # 148 · 3 months ago
I am sure you are glad email has spell check. That saves you from looking like the dipshit you are. I second the Fucktard. If Zones is about what you can provide than it is a battle LOST. Do everyone a favor and shut up.

flabbergassed which division do you work in, and how much do you make?

you seem like a small town gangster trying to impress, pretty sure you are little time trying to talk big. If you are so awesome, why not use your name? Greatness inspires, and you sure think you are great.

If you spent all this time job searching, you probably wouldn't have so many complaints. It's not that bad. I am complete agreeance that it is very scary out there, but it is for everyone and every company. Few companies are striving and growing and improving right now. I think it's best that we put this to rest. I understand there are some angry folks out there and there are folks that are happy.

To be fully honest (and I know I will be chastized, but oh well, right) - I love my job, I love working at Zones. I think my boss is a great guy. Yes it's true that he makes way more than I make, yes it's true that there are procedures I do not fully agree with. Nevertheless, I love my job and I got an opportunity that I would never have gotten elsewhere.

Please just put it to rest and relax. The world isn't ending because you got let go. Take the time you are putting into this nonsense blog and do some personal improvement. It's rather clear that a majority of you have some issue or another and that's why you were removed from the company. Just move on... Let go and move on with your life. Why thrive on anger that will get you no where?

Cheyeanne how long have you worked at Zones?
  • pov voided? · 3 months ago
well Cheyeanne I am a bit confused, you dont show up in the companies outlook or in webster, so what do you do in this company?

Sound full of shit to me
  • cheyenne · 2 months ago
Two years. I think everyone here is too pissed off about dumb stuff. If it is so bad to you, then don't work there. And if it were so bad while you worked there, then move on and get over it.

    WHAT DO YOU DO CHEYENNE

you dont show up in webster, you obviously are a top dog with this attention to detail

I still call bs on you
  • sonotworthyourtime1 · 4 weeks ago
Hmmm where to begin! thanks for the job while the economy sucked. But in the end, so not worth it. I did my job and I did it well. My certs would prove it. Zones, is a LOW COST Operational model. Meaning, the people who do the work (sales, merch, marketing, etc) get nothing. While all the new Insight blood gets so much more. Oh and let's not forget the salary caps that have been placed on everyone BUT those people. Oh and CA, that special team you are paying for... yeah, uhmm... they don't just support CA. They are doing all Security Software. Has Zones told you that or are you still paying for that "speicial" team? Oh and let's not forget that they don't want to pay overtime- so your manager will now ask you to stay late and then give you a vaction day... drawback, they manage to forget it and you don't get paid. Yeah, if you have no goals to move ahead, Zones is a great place. But I am done working for a soulless company. Time to actually move on.... I tried, but in the end, so not worth it

Hey tough guy Flabbergassed where are you?
then again you are a Zones employee, maybe this difficult new layout was too technical for you to figure out?

Are you able to look up any employee in webster? What information is listed? Last week an applicant walked in and it turned out he didn't really want a job here,This guy opened up his backpack and pulled out a hardcopy list of about 2500 active Zones accounts. It had their annual spend with Zones and some of the accounts had 20 or more contacts listed including a primary, a licensing coordinator, all the different product category contacts. I thought it was a joke but then I thought of all the weird stuff written about Zones these days? He was sort of a fidgety, squirrely looking kinda guy. Hadn't missed many meals. Not that sharp -- apparently he had sent us 2 resumes previously with a cover letter addressed to a different employer. Anyway, he showed up to the interview wearing a cotton necktie. I would love to know if he is still an employee there?
